Lateral Entry Program
The Hanover County Sheriff's Office accepts applications for the position of Deputy Sheriff for our Lateral Entry Program on a continual basis.
The Lateral Entry Program affords Virginia DCJS-law enforcement certified officers a chance to join one of the area's finest law enforcement agencies. Officers who have excelled in their law enforcement careers and are up to the task of meeting the high standards of the Hanover County Sheriff's Office are encouraged to apply. For lateral employment consideration, applicants must have experience with an agency whose primary function is community based policing.

Applicants must be certified as a police officer through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen. Applicants must also possess a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid driver's license, and successfully pass all phases of a highly competitive selection process. The selection process includes:
Compensation for officers hired through the lateral entry program will be based on experience, education, and training, up to a maximum of $68,767 per year (effective July 1, 2022). The Sheriff's Office offers a complete county benefits package in addition to a take home vehicle, college tuition reimbursement and deferred compensation.

- Oral review board
- Comprehensive background investigation
- Polygraph examination
- Interview with the Sheriff
Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the candidate must successfully complete the following requirements:
- Medical exam
- Psychological evaluation
- Physical agility test
