In consultation with the Medical Examiner, it has been determined that Craig M. Bates died after suffering from a of a gunshot wound.
Investigators continue to follow-up on all available leads. We are still seeking to speak with anyone having contact with the victim, observed the pictured Infinity SUV, or having knowledge on who he may have been with or communicated with, on the evening of June 26th and early morning hours of June 27th. Attached you will find a photo of Craig Bates and the vehicle, an Infinity SUV, that he was known to use (News Release link).

Investigators have identified the body discovered yesterday in the 1500 block off Mickie Town Road as 30-year-old Craig Michael Bates of the 1500 block of Mickie Town Road of Hanover County. This incident is being investigated as a homicide.
Known family members have been notified and we ask that you keep the family and friends of Craig Bates in your thoughts and prayers.

HANOVER, Va. – Today, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1500 block of Mickie Town Road for report of a deceased black male found outside near the road.
There are signs of trauma, however the cause and manner of death are still under investigation. Investigators are evaluating all evidence in this case and are working closely with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death, as well as to positively identify the victim.
