Hanover, VA – The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is making the public aware of another phone scam.
The Hanover County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a telephone scam where the caller poses as a family member requesting money to get out of jail. Usually, the suspect caller appears to have personal information about the victim and potential family members, including their first and last name.
In a recent case, the caller identified himself as the victim’s grandson, stating he needed money to get out of jail in another state. Another subject then gets on the phone and poses as an attorney, requesting a large sum of money for the grandson’s release.
Please know that this is a SCAM. These criminals will prey on unsuspecting citizens and even spoof or block telephone numbers in an attempt to legitimize their call.
